It is a myth that you need thousands of products for your daily skin care routine. I am a big believer in simplicity. All you need are the 5 essentials:
A good facial cleanser
A toner (optional)
Face moisturizer - Day cream/Night cream
It is crucial that you wash your face before retiring for the night. Be sure to remove all the make-up! Just like brushing and flossing your teeth are important, so it taking off the day’s dirt from your face. This will help prevent any oil build-up or acne break-outs. After removing the make-up, lather up using your favourite face cleanser. I am a big fan of St. Ives’ face care products and I’m currently using the Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub. It’s gentle enough to use every day and get the smooth, clear and refreshing feel.
After gently pat drying your face with a towel, you are welcome to use a toner. I know a lot of people like to use toners; however, for me toners are optional. As long as your face has some form of moisture after washing your face, you are gold! This is why pat drying is the best option so you can leave some excess dampness from the water. However, some people may need to use a toner (i.e. excessive oily skin), and it’s totally up to you. If you have oily skin - I would recommend LUSH’s Tea Tree Toner. If you also want to use a toner just because, LUSH also makes a toner for all skin types – Breath of Fresh Air, which I have also used and is great. The best things about these toners are that they come in a spray bottle, and all you need to do it squeeze one spray over your face and you are good to go for the next round.
Next up is applying your eye cream. Your eyes have the thinnest layer of skin in comparison to the rest of your face and it’s important that you use the right products to take care of that. I currently use Lancôme’s Génifique Eye Cream and lightly applying over my eyelids and under my eyes. Since you know your eyes best (puffy, dark circles or both), it is best to find a product that best suits you. Remember, the best solution to getting rid of puffy eyes or dark circles is to get enough rest (typically 8 hours of sleep at night).
Night routine - After applying your eye cream, you should moisturize your face. Depending on your skin type, you will need to find a night cream that best suits your needs. I am currently using Lancôme’s Blanc Nuit night cream and I love the feel of it on my face. It’s the perfect amount of moisture and leaves me feeling great.
Morning routine – repeat everything in the night routine, but replace it with a day cream with a minimum of SPF 15. I currently use Lancôme’s Beinfait Multi-Vital Cream.
Lastly, you will need to moisturize your lips. Make sure to scrub away any dead skin from your lips in Step 1, then apply your favourite lip chap. I love using Caramax (in the little container) for my lips.
This will leave your lips smooth and pouty for the next morning.
Remember: beauty is not on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that really counts! Don’t forget to drink plenty of water (recommended daily intake of 2.7L or 11 cups) to cleanse your system and give you a beautiful, healthy glow, along with plenty of other benefits.
